The Story Behind Solstice
Solstice began as a question rather than a drawing: what does a room feel like at the moment the light turns?
The answer took eighteen months. Early studies chased the geometry of low winter sun through glass, and the first maquettes were far too literal – a sun, a horizon, a set of rays. What survived was the quality rather than the picture: warm light gathered at the centre and thinning outward, so the piece reads as a source rather than an object.
The production form suspends hand-blown leaves at four depths. Each is set by eye against the others, which is why no two installations are identical and why the drawings can only ever be a starting point.
